Lost all your car keys? What to do next
No working key left? What to have ready, why proof of ownership matters, and how a new key gets made for your car.
Losing every key to your car is stressful, but it is a fixable problem. Here is what happens and how to make it quicker.
First: don't keep trying to start the car
If you have a damaged or "nearly working" key, stop trying it in the ignition. Some cars count failed attempts and lock the immobiliser for longer.
What to have ready
- The make, model and year of the car
- Where the car is right now
- Your ID and proof that you own the car or are allowed to have keys made — registration papers, or a letter from the owner
We will not make keys without proof of authority. That protects you as much as anyone.
How a new key is made
Every car's security system is different. On some cars a new key is cut and programmed through the diagnostic port. On others the immobiliser data has to be read from a module first. That is why we ask for the vehicle details before giving a price or a time: one generic answer would be wrong for most cars.
Does the car have to come in?
It depends on the car and the job. Send us where it is and we'll tell you whether it needs to come to the workshop.
Next step
WhatsApp us the make, model and year, or book a visit. Once you have your new key, think about a spare: it costs far less than starting from nothing again.
